During the past few years, the focus on eco-friendly living has become more important than ever. And when it comes to homeowners, there are so many ways to make your home both sustainable and a great place to grow old in.

Luckily, the measures that can be taken for sustainability and helping the planet do not sacrifice any of your comfort or convenience. Here are 7 ways in which you can change your Greater Grand Rapids property into an eco-friendly abode.

Step 1: Use renewable electricity sources

If you can generate even a little energy onsite, either by a micro-hydro system, solar paneling, or small-scale wind turbine, that can help channel nature into your own energy uses. Try choosing a power company that generates its power from renewable and sustainable sources. Alternatively, discuss your options for more sustainable energy and tips by finding an eco-friendly power company easily through online searches.

Step 2: Turn to green plumbing

Another way to retrofit your home is to switch to green plumbing. You can apply green plumbing techniques to your home at any stage, from renovating, building new, or upgrading. As the name implies, this is a great way to incorporate sustainability into your plumbing systems and your house.

These systems include low-flow toilets and showerheads, better pipes and water-based appliances, and taps designed to cut back on wasted water. You can also retrofit your yard by installing rainwater collection systems to reduce natural water wastage. By making your home “green”, you not only save on energy and bills, but you also add value to your home for any future resale. Find more information here on green plumbing and how to get started with it.

Step 3:  Insulate your space

By properly insulating your home, you can save money on heating and energy costs. This is one of the best ways to save money and the planet. A good place to start is to implement proper insulation in the basic structure of the home, including the walls and roof. You can also insulate your windows by investing in double-glazing for more heat retention in winter, and pairing them with thicker curtains to keep rooms cooler and darker in summer.

Step 4: Install a smart meter

To avoid any excess heating that will drive up your energy costs and harm the planet, installing a smart meter is another great option. These devices are a good way to monitor and regulate your electricity consumption, together with reducing your carbon footprint at the same time. There are some great tips about why you should install a smart meter.

Step 6: Invest in energy-efficiency

Switching out your light bulbs for energy-efficient ones is a good way to be more sustainable, whilst saving money on your electrical bill. With technology today, these lightbulbs cast as much light and switch on as fast as their normal, non-efficient counterparts. Plus, because these bulbs draw less electricity, you don’t need to replace them nearly as often as normal bulbs. If you prefer, LED bulbs also utilize much less electricity, making them another good option for efficiency

If you can, try and utilize the positioning of natural sunlight for lighting purposes. Figuring out your exposure direction and setting up your living space to reduce the need for lighting during the day is another excellent example of improving your energy-efficiency. Using natural light reduces your energy costs, creates a more sustainable planet, and gives you a daily dose of vitamin D from the sunlight!

Step 7: Select sustainable appliances

If you are looking at new appliances for your home, try to stick to opt for products that have high energy-efficiency ratings as this will save you money, and be great for the environment. Large appliances such as refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves/ovens, air conditioners, clothes dryers, and water heaters tend to be heavy lifters in terms of energy usage.

Large companies such as Bosch and LG offer consumers a range of household appliances that are sustainable and focus on saving on energy, without compromising the integrity of the machine or the quality of its service. Looking for these sustainable white goods is a great way to protect the planet.
