Better Than a Free Estimate

What could be better than a free estimate?

How about an honest price.

What’s the difference?

  • An estimate is a ballpark (and often VERY ballpark) number that’s based on what similar work has cost in the past. It’s quick, it’s not guaranteed, and there’s no reason to think it’s especially accurate. It’s not what you want to base a remodeling project on.
  • A price comes with a detailed proposal that’s based on the specifics of your project. It’s accurate, well thought out, and it’s guaranteed! It’s the exact price you’ll pay if you choose to go forward with the work.

At Amber Valley we’ve seen exactly what happens when a free estimate collapses into a broken promise. And it happens a lot. When estimates are free contractors can’t afford the time for an in-depth consultation and the customer might not feel the pressure to nail down all the finer details of the project ahead of time. It’s a recipe for misunderstanding and hard feelings.

So, we’ve chosen to do things differently, and do them better.

First Off

We chat. After you reach out we’d like to take about ten to fifteen minutes of your time to talk through the project: what you’re working with, your vision, your experience, and your budget. Once we’ve talked through it we’ll probably be able to give you a price range so you know—ballpark—what to expect and if it’s a possibility for you.

But isn’t that a free estimate?

Technically, sure. In fact, as part of the process we may even come out to take a look at your home and let you know what we think, at no cost to you.  But the goal here isn’t to give you a quick and dirty price just to win the job. It’s to see if this project is a good fit and to work towards something much more useful: the Project Discovery Agreement.

Your Proposal

We believe that in order to provide you with the best possible service from the right professionals, we charge for our time and service as a part of the Project Discovery Agreement. This means that you get a much higher quality proposal and you can look at your entire project on-paper before you commit.

The agreement includes:

  1. On-site field measurements and photographs
  2. A general scope of work
  3. Initial Drawings
  4. A “Preliminary Cost Projection” *
  5. A Review of the scope, drawings and Preliminary Cost Projection at our office.

*Note that costs here can still change—depending on your choices! Want a better countertop, hardwood, and a skylight? No problem! We’ll amend the document so you always know where you (and your budget) are at.
